When Datacenter is worth it

The break-even is virtual machine count. Standard covers two VMs per licensed host; Datacenter covers as many as the hardware can run. If you operate a Hyper-V host with more than a handful of VMs, a failover cluster, or plan to pool local disks with Storage Spaces Direct, Datacenter is the correct edition. For a single server with one or two workloads, Windows Server 2025 Standard does the same job for less.

Licensed per physical core. User or device CALs are separate, and Remote Desktop Services needs RDS CALs.

1.4 GHz 64-bit processor with virtualisation extensions, 512 MB RAM minimum (plan for far more on a host), 32 GB storage, Gigabit Ethernet, and UEFI 2.3.1c with Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 recommended.
