Windows Server 2025 Standard

Windows Server 2025 Standard is the newest Long-Term Servicing Channel release of Microsoft's server operating system, in the edition built for physical servers and light virtualisation. Standard versus Datacenter in one paragraph

Standard licenses the host plus up to two Windows Server virtual machines on a fully licensed server, which suits a small business running one or two workloads. Once you are hosting many VMs, building a failover cluster, or need Storage Spaces Direct, shielded VMs or software-defined networking, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the edition designed for it.

What is new in Server 2025

• SMB over QUIC in every edition: secure file access across the internet without a VPN.

Support lifecycle

Microsoft's Windows Server 2025 lifecycle page lists mainstream support to 13 November 2029 and extended support to 14 November 2034, the longest runway of any Windows Server on sale.

Licensing notes

Windows Server is licensed per physical core under Microsoft's model. Client Access Licences for users or devices are sold separately from the operating system, and Remote Desktop Services needs its own RDS CALs.

Why is my key rejected on an evaluation install?

Evaluation media must first be converted to the full edition with DISM /Set-Edition. Typing a key straight into an evaluation build is the most common reason a valid server key fails.

Can I upgrade in place from Server 2022?

Yes. Server 2025 supports in-place upgrade from Server 2012 R2 and later. Back up first.

Can I move from Standard to Datacenter later?

Yes, with DISM and a Datacenter key, without reinstalling.
